Portfolio 2020-2021

2020 - 2021 was my First Year at Nottingham Trent Univeristy studying Fine Art BA. Originally stuck in my room due to Covid lockdown, I drew what was available in my room and found inspiration in rubbish and paracetamol packets. Over the course of the year, as I was able to attend workshops and finally get into the studios, I focussed on shape and colour to develop my work through to creating layered painted artworks, that were quite sculptural in nature, as well as ceramic and plaster pieces, whilst playing with staging and installation.

I also became really interested in naming processes for artwork. I found a lot of my pieces were going to become 'Untitled', if I didn't work something out. I find the title 'Untitled' very boring and it gives nothing to the viewer (which maybe for some artists is the point), but I love how Michael Craig-Martin's 'An Oak Tree' immediatley makes you consider how his glass on a shelf if actually an oak tree and attribute symbolism to it (even though he says it actually is one, I'm willing to believe him). Inspired by the seeming randomness, I started to use a random word generator to create names for my artwork. And low and behold I immediately started attributing elements of my work to that name even though they hadn't been created together..... names are powerful....
