Portfolio 2021-2022
Starting a new academic year, my second year at NTU studying Fine Art BA, I moved my focus away from household rubbish and instead wanted to focus on a different avenue that I could take inspiration from. Once again I looked around me for the parts of my everyday life that are integral but I maybe don't pay enough attention to. My focus landed on food.
Food as a subject matter was great fun for me, as I loved the different colours and shapes that could be drawn from: different fruits, vegetables and other food items. My favourite to draw from quickly became crustaceans, and my painting 'The Lobster' became one of my most iconic pieces of work. As well as getting heavily into using spray paint (inspired by artists such as Katherine Bernhardt who glorifies and celebrates everyday items), I also branched out into plaster and ceramics, which were both relatively new for me, and started as a slow process but quickly became something I enjoyed. Artist Kristin Romberg influenced my attempts at abstracting some of the forms in my work and enjoying free flowing mark making, as well as playing with multiple different materials within one piece. I had mixed results within my work at the start of this year and struggled with where to take it, but experimenting with painting was the lifeline my work needed, and once again, collaging gave me the freedom to experiment and develop quick outcomes that I then went and edited digitally.
